MARKSTEIN
Birmingham, Alabama
This young, growing marketing company desired a sophisticated, technology-rich space to reflect their cutting-edge image leading them to select the second floor space in the historic Federal Reserve office building in the heart of Birmingham’s downtown business district.
The design concept was to express and expose a large extent of the historic building’s elements and structure creating a juxtaposition of innovative technology and contemporary finishes.
The design features existing polished concrete floors, exposed concrete columns, brick masonry and ceiling structure. The exposed structure provides a historic and authentic back drop contrasted by state-of-the-art, daylight filled, meeting rooms, sweeping ceilings, and modern workstations, and digital technology throughout. Strong visual connections throughout the space and dynamic curves are used to emphasize circulation paths. Glass conference rooms and office fronts create a sense of transparency and foster a culture of collaboration. The roof was converted to a private outdoor patio creating a visual connection to the outside that encourages collaboration and relaxation.
